How I Finally Got Good at Drawing the Face – 3 Tips that took me out of Beginner Hell

📝 SHOW NOTES:
I have to give big credit to the brilliant illustrator Chyan as I first encountered the box and turnarounds method through his course (which was one of the resources I used to study in those 2 months).
As I’m showing you the actual practice and studies I did during those 2 months, some of the study sketches were from there among other resources and my own experimentation.
I eventually developed my own way to apply the method to suit me and my style, and what I’m sharing in this video is a culmination of that + the best stuff I learned. But his teaching really helped form the foundation for it, so big shoutout to him!

Also sorry for the blurred part at the end, some of the studies I was showing was from a resource that doesn’t allow people to show their studies of it, so I edited it out.

  1. I can relate to that feeling of frustration, I didn't understand what I was doing wrong with the head and how to fix it, thanks to you I might be able to overcome this problem finally. Although I have to say your art looks really good even before fixing these mistakes.

  2. you might not read this and honestly it doesn't matter, all that matters is me wanting to thank you

  3. It all makes sense now. The reason why I gave up art was because I gave up on improvement because the whole reason I started drawing in the first place was to get better. And I had no motivation because I thought that no matter how hard I tried, I wouldn’t be good enough and that made me wonder what the point of it was. What I’m saying is that I think I can get better and I feel motivated to do what makes me happy again.

  4. As someone who gave up on drawing a few years ago due to a few reasons, I find your video series on how to draw amazing. When I remember back when I was actively trying to get better there weren't any good artists that would explain how they did things, so you going out of your way and explain how you do things is amazing to watch. Who knows, maybe I'll start drawing again because of these videos.

  5. The problem for me here is drawing a box on different angles, the tricky part is the slight direction of the lines that sometimes I can't see clearly how it directs so the depth of the shape ends up incorrect.

  6. Thank you for practicing can help me draw head accuracy. This help me a lot. I try to find the way to practice. Your tips really helpful. Thank you so much.

  7. ok, first of all, I would like to say that you r actually insane at drawing! Next, I would like to ask how did you learn how to draw because right now my goal is to draw illustrations and fan art as a hobby but I don't really know how to/where to get started. Can you please recommend any programs/courses/exercises that you find helpful during your early stages? Also, I am sorry because I am pretty sure you get this question a lot.

  8. Thank you so much this helped motivate me so much! the idea of thinking of stuff in 3d and foreshortening was amazing definitely helped me! also anatomy… yaehh i should probably learn that tooo haha

  11. I just want to say I love your videos Oriday! I struggled to get faces and perspective right for a while now and many tutorial and guides always uses the circle method which has never worked for me. The face was always off and it affected the rest of the drawing.
Seeing the examples and the way you explained the tips was helpful! I been practicing the box method and I can see an improvement. Thank you!

  12. Omg this helped me so much. I started drawing on a whim and seeing everyone drawing circle for the head make me suffer so much since i, well, can't draw it properly.

  13. Could you do something on how to achieve thinner lines for your line-art? I'm trying really hard to achieve the style of other art similar to yours, but I just can not figure out how to get my lines to look that thin. Admittedly it would be nice if I could show you what I've done so that way you could tell me based on what you can see, but either way, I just really want to improve my skills and get better

  14. I just found your videos and WOW, it's amazing how fast and how much you've improved!! your art now is amazing, you're one of my favorite artists ever and your videos are all anime artists really need <3 thank you!
do you plan to make a video of how you separate each layer?
